Does anyone else have only 1 eye impacted?

Hi everyone,

I’m 6 months into my TED experience and only one eye is bulging/lid retracted. Is anyone else in the same boat? Any makeup tips to make things look even?

Thank you!

  1. Hi, I’m sorry to hear that you’re navigating all of this. I’ve written several articles on this site about how makeup helped me feel more comfortable and more like myself. I found the smoky eye technique to be really helpful in making the eyes look like they are slightly farther back. It’s tricky when one eye is different than the other. Consider doing the smoky eye technique on both eyes but using slightly darker colors on the eye that is experiencing more symptoms, and go a shade or two lighter on the eye that has stayed the same. You can also use a slightly thicker eyeliner on the eye that is experiencing more symptoms. Hope this helps, and please feel free to let me know if you have any other questions. To be honest, makeup was the thing that mentally helped me the most during the active phase. Wishing you well, Jessica H (thyroideyedisease.net, team member)

    1. Hi Jessica, thanks so much for your reply. I will definitely give these tips a try! Thank you again for taking the time. It means a lot. Hope you are well 💗

  2. Yes my right eye is affected left eye is sensitive to light and has a watering problem more than my right eye but my right eye us off as far as seeing . Im euthroid TED im 100 percent sure it was thr covid vaccine that caused it. So anyways yes one eye affected

    1. I’m euthyroid too (but have Graves’ disease— had been off drugs for a year when it happened). My occuloplastic surgeon mentioned seeing more cases since the vaccine… but I also had COVID in the months before as well as an immense amount of stress, so who knows what set it off. Hope you are hanging in there. 💗

    2. , thanks for joining the conversation. You're right it is so tough to pinpoint what can be the trigger for TED, this article covers some of the risk factors for TED: https://thyroideyedisease.net/risk-factors All the best, Sam S. (ThyroidEyeDisease.net, team member).

  3. Both of my eyes are affected but the left is so much worse then the right. I'm going to look into those makeup tips.

    1. , it is so common for one eye to be more affected then the other! Have you had a chance to try out these tips yet? Did you find them helpful? Best, Sam S. (TED Team).
